Sandy Lake

Sandy Lake GateSandy Lake is located on the western edge of a plateau covered by rolling hills; a plateau extending over several hundred square miles and rising over two thousand feet above sea level. The 1800's was an active period for the area around Sandy Lake. Possibly as early as 1832, the Hudson's Bay Company operated an outpost on the Rolling River called Dejarlais House. In October of 1868, a permanent trading post was erected less than 2 miles west of Thomas Lake called Riding Mountain House. By 1880, Doupe and McFee, Dominion land surveyors, had mapped the whole area around Sandy lake. Census taken in 1897 showed that the population in the Municipality of Harrison was 286 people, 75 of them classified as farmers. By 1900, the area around Sandy Lake was still mostly uninhabited. However, by 1901 large numbers of Ukrainian settlers began arriving in the area and by 1910 most of the land had already been claimed with few plots available. In the 2021 Census, Sandy Lake had a population of 301 living in 157 of its 269 total private dwellings.
