Onanole

Elk StatueOnanole Manitoba was first recognized when the post office opened in 1928 under postmaster Neil W. Tracy. The name "Onanole" was suggested by Mr. Tracy after the Onanole Hotel in the Adirondacks (United States) which was similar to this "on a knoll" location. The elk was chosen as the rural symbol of the area in tribute to the elk and pioneers that lived in the area. The community later established the Onanole School district in 1935.
Onanole is situated 105 km north of Brandon. It is located at the south entrance to Riding Mountain National Park. According to 1991 statistics the population of Onanole is 404, but during the summer it triples because of summer residents. Onanole was part of the Rural Municipality of Park South which had a population of 935 in 1991.
On January 1, 1997, the Local Government District of Park, through an Act of the Provincial Legislature, was created as "The Rural Municipality of Park. From that day on, the functions of the local authority moved from the legal control of the province to the local elected Council. On January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamtion with the RM of Harrison to form the Municipality of Harrison Park.
