Newdale

NewdaleNewdale in the making – 1878. As recorded by Edward Cook in a letter to his sister, Sarah (Mrs. A. Anderson) in September 1933:

QUOTE: “I happen to be very familiar with the christening of Newdale and selected the name – made up from the place being a ‘new’ district and the ‘dale’ from the low ground south of the little mountain – Mosquito Hill. The picture is a little overdrawn as hills and dales at that location are a little scarce until reaching the Little Saskatchewan River, however, I made it stick, but it had to be confirmed and arranged with the Post Office department at Ottawa.” In 1880 or 1881 the application for Edward Cook to become the postmaster was confirmed in Ottawa, as well as the name “Newdale P. O.”.

On this land E ½ of 30-15-20 the first post office of Newdale was established in the trading post, known first as the trading post of Cook Brothers, but finally as Newdale. After completion of the railway westward, the post office was moved north about 3 miles to the present site of the community of Newdale.
