Riding Mountain National Park is located in southwestern Manitoba, Canada. It sits atop the Manitoba Escarpment, a highland plateau that rises dramatically from the surrounding prairies. The park covers approximately 3,000 square kilometres and is one of the largest protected areas in the prairies region.
The park is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, including boreal forest, mixed forest, parkland, and open grasslands. This variety of landscapes supports an abundance of wildlife, including plains bison, black bears, wolves, moose, elk, white-tailed deer, and over 200 species of birds.
The town of Wasagaming serves as the main service centre within the park and is one of the few resort communities located inside a Canadian national park. It offers accommodation, dining, shopping, and recreational facilities for visitors. The townsite sits on the shores of Clear Lake, which is the largest and most popular lake in the park.
Visitors to Riding Mountain National Park can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities throughout the year. Summer activities include hiking, cycling, swimming, boating, fishing, camping, and wildlife viewing. In winter, the park offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and skating.
The park has a significant cultural history as well, with connections to Indigenous peoples who have lived in and around the area for thousands of years. It was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1986, recognizing its ecological importance and the balance between human activity and conservation in the region.
